– Pani Prezydent, z pewnością ma Pani świadomość tego, że wpisała się Pani już na stałe – i to złotymi zgłoskami – w historię światowej fajki: jest Pani pierwszą kobietą, która dzierży stery zorganizowanego środowiska wielbicieli fajek i tytoni na całym świecie. Jakie to uczucie?
– Przede wszystkim czuję się zaszczycona i podekscytowana, ponieważ głęboko wierzę w moc tego małego, lecz ogromnego przedmiotu – fajki, który przetrwał w czasie, wykraczając poza historię – jeśli można tak powiedzieć. Podobnie jak społeczność międzynarodowa (CIPC), ale nie tylko, o czym świadczą tradycje związane z fajką, rozpowszechnione w różnych krajach na całym świecie.
– Z pewnością decyzja o kandydowaniu na funkcję Prezydenta CIPC nie była łatwa. Co zdecydowało, że podjęła się Pani tej misji z całym bagażem sukcesów i potknięć wieloletniego koordynowania działań w szeroko rozumianym fajczarstwie, ale za „męskich” rządów?
– Szczerze mówiąc, uważam, że fakty, wyniki i dowody liczą się we wszystkich aspektach życia: osiąga się je tylko wtedy, gdy konkretne zadanie jest wykonywane z zaangażowaniem i oddaniem. Dlatego koncepcje macho czy feminizmu nie mają tu większego znaczenia: staram się zamiast tego skupić na pracy nad osiąganiem rezultatów. Oczywiście, kluczowe jest stworzenie zespołu ludzi, którzy wspólnie będą rozwijać projekty i osiągać cele; sami, to znaczy indywidualnie, niewiele możemy zdziałać, a wierzę, że siła tkwi w jedności. We Włoszech, odkąd objąłem przewodnictwo we Włoskiej Federacji Klubów Fajkowych, z roku na rok liczba członków, klubów, działań i inicjatyw, a także upowszechnianie kultury fajczarskiej poprzez komunikację i narzędzia informacyjne, wzrosły wykładniczo. Decyzja o kandydowaniu na prezydenta CIPC była bardzo trudna, ponieważ praca, którą trzeba wykonać na poziomie międzynarodowym, jest zdecydowanie znacząca, ważna i złożona. Zdaję sobie jednak sprawę, że żyjemy w trudnych czasach, w których ograniczenia i komplikacje dla miłośników fajki i przyjemności z palenia narastają coraz bardziej. Uważam, że niezwykle ważne jest, aby coraz bardziej podkreślać tę wspaniałą kulturę, zwracając się zwłaszcza do nowych pokoleń i starać się inspirować je do podchodzenia do niej bez podążania za stereotypami.
– Co – Pani zdaniem – jest najważniejsze dla fajczarstwa, dla ludzi trudniących się wytwarzaniem pięknych przedmiotów, jakimi są fajki?
– Dla tych z nas, którzy kochają fajkę, ważne jest, aby móc doświadczać jej istoty w pełnej wolności i wzajemnym szacunku, mając nadzieję na zrozumienie wartości dodanej, jaką może generować kontakt międzyludzki, zarówno jako pasja, jak i zawód.
– Na ile Pani ojczyzna – Włochy – miała wpływ na kształtowanie się Pani miłości do fajki, do niepowtarzalnej atmosfery zgromadzeń fajczarskich oraz tej – panującej w warsztatach i zakładach wytwarzających fajki?
– Dla mnie Włochy zawsze były punktem wyjścia tej szczególnej pasji: ponieważ z każdej wizyty w każdym warsztacie, każdym miejscu produkcji, każdym klubie, wydarzeniu, degustacji i konkursie zawsze wracałem do domu z nową świadomością i naukami od ludzi, których miałem szczęście poznać.
– Żyjemy w trudnych czasach dla fajczarskiej społeczności. Przykładów, które w bardzo negatywny sposób wpływają na nasze samopoczucie – samopoczucie wielbicieli fajki – można mnożyć w nieskończoność. Ot, choćby ostatnie Mistrzostwa Świata w Oirschot w Niderlandach, gdy ich uczestnicy współdzielili namiot z… pasącymi się obok owcami. Czy sądzi Pani, że odbieranie nam – wręcz konstytucyjnych – praw do wyboru hobby i zajmowania się nim będzie się pogłębiać?
– Zacytuję słowa włoskiego fajczarza, którego niestety już nie ma z nami…: „Fajka może zachorować, ale nigdy nie umrze”. W tej definicji dostrzegam ogromną prawdę: świat fajki jest trudny od wewnątrz ze względu na swoją złożoność, która nie zawsze jest zrozumiała z zewnątrz, ale stale podlega i jest „zakłócany” przez te zewnętrzne efekty, reprezentowane przez ograniczenia i – jeśli można tak powiedzieć – homogenizację, której fajka podlegała w ostatnich dekadach, niebezpieczeństwa i toksyczność papierosów. Cóż, uważam, że praca nas wszystkich, entuzjastów, powinna być skoncentrowana na tym konkretnym kierunku: aby spróbować podkreślić, że fajka nie jest porównywalna z samym segmentem „palenia”, ale jest naprawdę zupełnie innym Wszechświatem.
– Co – Pani zdaniem – należy zrobić by te ogólnoświatowe tendencje, wręcz „politycznej” poprawności w odniesieniu do fajki, odwrócić?
– Powinniśmy wszyscy „robić więcej hałasu”, czyli zarażać innych, mówiąc im, jak wiele piękna jest na tym świecie. Powinniśmy organizować więcej wydarzeń kulturalnych, aby promować to nasze wspólne dziedzictwo i starać się dotrzeć z nim do instytucji, lokalnych i krajowych społeczności, angażując w przekazywanie naszego przesłania osoby, które mogą być naszymi rzecznikami, takie jak dziennikarze, pisarze i osoby zaangażowane w komunikację. Wreszcie, powinniśmy być bardziej ewangeliczni w tej pasji, nie bać się chodzić z fajką w ustach, ani być z nią fotografowanymi.
– Na ile fakty, że teraz kobieta kieruje pracami CIPC pomaga Pani lub przeszkadza w pracy?
– Nie sądzę, żeby to była pomoc ani przeszkoda; raczej uważam, że jest to konieczne dla osiągnięcia konkretnych rezultatów…
– Jak wybór Pani na to stanowisko przyjęli Pani bliscy, przyjaciele, znajomi?
– Ze zdumieniem, radością, a może nawet odrobiną dumy. Mam ogromne szczęście, że mam wokół siebie ludzi, którzy we mnie wierzą, czasem o wiele bardziej niż ja sam wierzę w swoje możliwości…
– Z pewnością ma Pani plan działania na całą swoją kadencję. Być może nawet na kolejne lata. Jeśli tak, proszę o podzielenie się z nami kilkoma szczegółami.
– Po pierwsze, uważam, że konieczne jest jak najdokładniejsze poznanie różnych kultur państw członkowskich CIPC: z jednej strony jestem osobą niezwykle ciekawą, z drugiej zdaję sobie sprawę, że aby cokolwiek zrobić, trzeba się jak najlepiej przygotować i starać się jak najwięcej nauczyć. Dlatego zamierzam zbliżyć się do różnych narodów, aby poznać ich działania, idee i tradycje oraz ich zastosowania w odniesieniu do fajki. Zdaję sobie również sprawę, że – jak wspomniałam – konieczne jest jak najszersze upowszechnienie tej cennej kultury, poprzez zorganizowane działania. W szczególności uważam, że narzędzia, z których korzystaliśmy we Włoszech, mogą być udostępnione całemu Komitetowi Międzynarodowemu: z pewnością można je również wdrożyć, a nawet udoskonalić. Nie jesteśmy idealni, jesteśmy po prostu autentycznymi, pełnymi pasji ludźmi, którzy robią, co w ich mocy…
– Czy Pamięta Pani swoja pierwszą fajkę i pierwszy tytoń? Jak Pani weszła w ich posiadanie?
– Moją pierwszą fajką był Savinelli Churchwarden kupiony w sklepie tytoniowym, razem z tytoniem „Italia”. Nadal mam oba z tego pierwszego zakupu w 2008 roku.
– A Pani ulubione fajki i tytonie?
– Uwielbiam fajki o niedużych rozmiarach; moim ulubionym kształtem jest Prince, ale także Billiard i Pot. Wykończenia jak najbardziej naturalne, piaskowane lub gładkie, z mnóstwem pięknych, widocznych „ptasich oczu” i „płomieni”.
– W tym roku mistrzynią świata została Elizabeth Dobnig z Austrii – znana na całym świecie wielbicielka fajki. Czy Pani też ma swoje rekordy?
– Mój rekord życiowy to 1 godzina i 17 minut, nic nadzwyczajnego. Co prawda nie jestem dobrym turniejowiczem, ale z drugiej strony doceniam wszystko, co wiąże się z zarządzaniem i organizacją imprez, turniejów, spotkań.
– Pani Prezydent, życzymy Pani wytrwałości w niełatwej pracy, skutecznego pokonywania barier i tego byśmy zawsze mieli powody – w co absolutnie nikt nie wątpi – do dumy z faktu, że naszą prezydent CIPC jest Genny Magrin.
– Dziękuję bardzo i dodam, że mam nadzieję, iż z czasem zdobędę szacunek polskich fajczarzy, a może nawet ich przyjaźń. Z niecierpliwością czekam na spotkania w Polsce!

Signora Presidente, lei è sicuramente consapevole di aver già lasciato un segno indelebile – e a lettere d’oro – nella storia dell’industria mondiale della pipa: è la prima donna a guidare una comunità organizzata di appassionati di pipa e tabacco in tutto il mondo. Come si sente?
Mi sento onorata, prima di tutto ed emozionata, perchè credo davvero molto nel potere di questo piccolo ma immenso oggetto (la Pipa), capace di resistere nel tempo, attraversando se vogliamo la storia, come lo è quella della Comunità Internazionale (il CIPC) ma non solo, come testimoniano le tradizioni legate alla Pipa e diffuse in diverse Nazioni del Mondo.
La decisione di candidarsi alla presidenza del CIPC non è stata certo facile. Cosa l’ha spinta a intraprendere questa missione, con tutti i successi e le battute d’arresto di molti anni di coordinamento delle attività nell’industria della pipa, in senso lato, ma sotto il dominio „maschile”?
Onestamente, credo che contino in tutte le dimensioni della vita, più I fatti, i risultati e le evidenze: questi si rggiungono solo se un determinate Lavoro viene eseguito con impegno e dedizione.Ecco quindi che il concetto di maschilismo o femminismo, trovano poco spazio: cerco di concentrarmi piuttosto nel lavorare per ottenere risultati. Naturalmente, fondamentale è la creazione di un Team di persone per sviluppare con unità I progetti e raggiungere gli obbiettivi: da soli, individualmente intendo, possiamo fare poco e credo che la forza stia nell’unione collettiva.
In Italia, da quando ho assunto la Presidenza della Federazione Nazionale dei Pipa Club, anno dopo anno, I numeri degli iscritti, dei club, delle attività, delle iniziative, nonchè la diffusione della cultura stessa legata alla Pipa attraverso gli strumenti di comunicazione e divulgazione, sono in aumento esponenziale. La scelta di Candidarmi come Presidente del Cipc è stata molto difficile, in quanto il Lavoro da svolgere a livello Internazionale è decisamente corposo ed importante, nonchè articolato.Ma sono consapevole che viviamo in anni difficili, dove sempre più avanzano restrizioni e complicazioni per chi ama la Pipa e la sua piacevolezza: credo sia indispensabile far sempre più emergere questa meravigliosa cultura, parlando soprattutto alle nuove generazioni e cercando di ispirarle ad avvicinarsi ad essa senza vivere di stereotipi.
Cosa, secondo lei, è più importante per chi fuma la pipa, per chi crea oggetti belli come le pipe?
Importante è per chi come noi ama la Pipa, la possibilità di vivere la sua essenza in totale libertà e rispetto reciproco, con l’augurio di comprendere quanto possa essere un valore aggiunto il contatto umano che può generare questo meraviglioso oggetto, sia in una dimensione di passione, sia a livello di una professione.
In che misura la sua terra d’origine, l’Italia, ha influenzato il suo amore per la pipa, l’atmosfera unica dei raduni dedicati alla pipa e l’atmosfera che si respira nelle officine e negli stabilimenti di produzione?
L’Italia per me è sempre il punto di origine di questa particolare passione: perchè in ogni visita ad ogni laboratorio, ad ogni produzione, ad ogni Club, manifestazione, degustazione, gara, sono sempre tornata a casa con una nuova consapevolezza ed insegnamento appresi dalle persone che ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare.
Viviamo tempi difficili per la comunità dei fumatori di pipa. Gli esempi che hanno un impatto molto negativo sul nostro benessere – il benessere degli amanti della pipa – sono infiniti. Prendiamo, ad esempio, i recenti Campionati del Mondo di Oirschot, nei Paesi Bassi, dove i partecipanti hanno condiviso una tenda con… pecore che pascolavano lì vicino. Pensa che la negazione del nostro diritto – persino costituzionale – di scegliere e coltivare i nostri hobby continuerà?
Riprendo delle parole di un’appassionatissimo Fumatore di Pipa Italiano che putroppo oggi non c’è più… “La Pipa può ammalarsi, ma non morirà mai”. In questa definizione ci trovo una enorme verità: il mondo della Pipa è difficoltoso dall’interno per la sua complessità che non sempre dall’esterno viene compresa, ma è per l’appunto soggetto e “disturbato” da questi effetti esterni rappresentati dalla limitazione e se vogliamo, omogenizzazione che la Pipa sta subendo nelle ultime decadi, alla pericolosità e tossicità della sigaretta. Ecco, credo che il Lavoro di tutti noi appassionati, debba dirigersi in questa specifica direzione: per cercare di evidenziare quanto la Pipa non è comparabile al segmento del mero “fumo”, ma sia davvero tutto un’altro Universo.
Cosa, secondo lei, si dovrebbe fare per invertire queste tendenze globali di correttezza, persino „politicamente” corretta, riguardo alla pipa?
Dovremmo tutti, fare “più rumore”: ovvero diventare contagiosi per gli altri, parlando loro di quanta Bellezza vi sia in questo Mondo. Collateralmente dovremmo organizzare più eventi culturali per promuovere questo nostro patrimonio collettivo e cercare di farlo conoscere alle Istituzioni, alle nostre realtà territoriali e Nazionali, coinvolgendo persone che si facciano da portavoce per noi, ad esempio, giornalisti, scrittori, persone dedite alla comunicazione, nel trasmettere Il nostro messaggio. Infine dovremmo essere più testimonial di questa passione, senza alcun timore di passeggiare con la nostra pipa in bocca o di farci ritrarre, con questa.
In che misura il fatto che una donna ora presieda il CIPC aiuta o ostacola il suo lavoro?
Non credo sia ne un aiuto ne tantomeno un ostacolo, piuttosto credo sia necessario portare in concreto dei risultati.
Come hanno reagito la sua famiglia, i suoi amici e i suoi conoscenti alla sua elezione a questa carica?
Con stupore, felicità e forse anche un piccolo pizzico d’orgoglio. Ho l’immensa fortuna di avere accanto persone che credono in me, a volte, molto più di quanto io stessa creda nelle mie capacità…
Ha sicuramente un piano d’azione per tutto il suo mandato. Forse anche per i prossimi anni. In tal caso, la preghiamo di condividere con noi alcuni dettagli.
Prima di tutto, credo sia necessario conoscere il più possible le diverse culture degli Stati membri del CIPC: sono da una parte una persona estremamente curiosa, dall’altra sono consapevole che per fare qualsiasi cosa, sia necessario prima, prepararsi il più possible e cercare di conoscere il più possible. Intendo avvicinarmi quindi alle diverse Nazioni per conoscere le loro attività, le loro idee e tradizioni e le applicazioni nelle loro dimensioni relative alla Pipa. Sono altresi consapevole che sia necessario far conoscere come già dicevo questa Preziosa cultura il più possible, attraverso attività organizzate.
Nello specifico penso che gli strumenti che abbiamo utilizzato in Italia, possano essere condivisi con tutto il Comitato Internazionale: di certo possono inoltre essere implementati e pure migliorati. Non siamo Perfetti, siamo solo degli autentici appassionati chef anno del proprio meglio…
Ricorda la sua prima pipa e il suo primo tabacco? Come li ha ottenuti?
La mia prima Pipa: una Savinelli Churchwarden acquistata in Tabaccheria, unitamente al Tabacco “Italia”: conserve ancora entrambi da quella prima carica avvenuta nel 2008…
Quali sono le sue pipe e i suoi tabacchi preferiti?
Amo le pipe non troppo grandi, il mio shape preferito è la Prince, ma anche le Billiard, le Pot. Finiture il più possible naturali, sabbiate o lisce con tanti begli occhi di pernice e fiamme in bella vista…
Quest’anno, Elizabeth Dobnig dall’Austria, un’appassionata di pipe di fama mondiale, è diventata campionessa del mondo. Ha anche qualche record?

An Interview with Genny Magrin – President of CIPC

Madam President, you are certainly aware that you have already left an indelible mark—and in gold letters—on the history of the global pipe industry: you are the first woman to lead an organized community of pipe and tobacco enthusiasts worldwide. How do you feel?
I feel honored, first of all, and excited, because I truly believe in the power of this small yet immense object (the pipe), capable of enduring over time, transcending history, if you will, as has that of the international community (the CIPC) but not only, as evidenced by the traditions linked to the pipe and widespread in various nations around the world.
The decision to run for president of the CIPC was certainly not easy. What drove you to undertake this mission, with all the successes and setbacks of many years of coordinating activities in the pipe industry, broadly speaking, but under „male” domination?
Honestly, I believe that facts, results, and evidence matter in all aspects of life: these are achieved only if a specific task is carried out with commitment and dedication. Therefore, the concepts of machismo or feminism have little place: I try instead to focus on working to achieve results. Naturally, creating a team of people to develop projects together and achieve goals is crucial: alone, I mean individually, we can do little, and I believe that strength lies in collective unity. In Italy, since I assumed the presidency of the National Federation of Pipe Clubs, year after year, the number of members, clubs, activities, and initiatives, as well as the dissemination of pipe culture itself through communication and outreach tools, have increased exponentially. The decision to run for President of the CIPC was very difficult, as the work to be done at the international level is decidedly substantial, important, and complex. But I am aware that we live in difficult times, where restrictions and complications are increasingly advancing for those who love the pipe and its pleasure: I believe it is essential to increasingly highlight this wonderful culture, speaking especially to the new generations and trying to inspire them to approach it without living by stereotypes.
What, in your opinion, is the most important for pipe smokers, for those who create beautiful objects like pipes?
For those of us who love the pipe, it’s important to be able to experience its essence in complete freedom and mutual respect, hoping to understand the added value of the human contact this wonderful object can generate, both as a passion and as a profession.
To what extent has your homeland, Italy, influenced your love of the pipe, the unique atmosphere of pipe gatherings, and the atmosphere in workshops and production facilities?
For me, Italy has always been the starting point of this particular passion: because in every visit to every workshop, every production site, every club, event, tasting, and competition, I have always returned home with a new awareness and lessons learned from the people I have been fortunate enough to meet.
We live in difficult times for the pipe-smoking community. The examples that have a profoundly negative impact on our well-being—the well-being of pipe lovers—are endless. Take, for example, the recent World Championships in Oirschot, Netherlands, where participants shared a tent with… sheep grazing nearby. Do you think the denial of our right—even our constitutional right—to choose and cultivate our hobbies will continue?
I quote the words of a passionate Italian pipe smoker who is sadly no longer with us… „The pipe may get sick, but it will never die.” I find a huge truth in this definition: the world of the pipe is difficult from within due to its complexity, which is not always understood from the outside, but it is precisely subject to and „disturbed” by these external effects represented by the limitation and, if you will, homogenization that the pipe has been undergoing in recent decades, the dangers and toxicity of cigarettes. Well, I believe that the work of all of us enthusiasts should be directed in this specific direction: to try to highlight how the Pipe is not comparable to the mere „smoking” segment, but is truly a whole other Universe.
What, in your opinion, is given What should we do to reverse these global trends of correctness, even „politically” correctness, regarding the pipe?
We should all make „more noise”: that is, become contagious to others, telling them how much Beauty there is in this World. Likewise, we should organize more cultural events to promote this collective heritage of ours and try to make it known to institutions, our local and national communities, involving people who can act as spokespeople for us, such as journalists, writers, and people dedicated to communication, in conveying our message. Finally, we should be more evangelical about this passion, without any fear of walking around with our pipe in our mouths or being photographed with it.
To what extent does the fact that a woman now presides over the CIPC help or hinder your work?
I don’t think it’s a help or a hindrance; rather, I believe it’s necessary to achieve concrete results…
How did your family, friends, and acquaintances react to your election to this position?
With amazement, happiness, and perhaps even a little pride. I am immensely fortunate to have people around me who believe in me, sometimes much more than I believe in my own abilities…
You certainly have a plan of action for your entire term. Perhaps even for the coming years. If so, please share some details with us.
First of all, I believe it is necessary to learn as much as possible about the different cultures of the CIPC member states: on the one hand, I am an extremely curious person, on the other, I am aware that to do anything, it is necessary to prepare as much as possible and try to learn as much as possible. I therefore intend to get closer to the different nations to learn about their activities, their ideas and traditions, and their applications in relation to the Pipe. I am also aware that, as I mentioned, it is necessary to make this precious culture known as widely as possible through organized activities.
Specifically, I believe that the tools we have used in Italy can be shared with the entire International Committee: they can certainly also be implemented and even improved. We’re not perfect, we’re just authentic passionate chefs who do their best…
Do you remember your first pipe and tobacco? How did you get them?
My first pipe: a Savinelli Churchwarden purchased at a tobacconist’s, along with „Italia” tobacco: I still have both from that first load in 2008…
What are your favorite pipes and tobaccos?
I love pipes that aren’t too big; my favorite shape is the Prince, but also the Billiard and the Pot. Finishes as natural as possible, sandblasted or smooth, with lots of beautiful bird’s-eye and flames in full view…
This year, Elizabeth Dobnig from Austria, a world-renowned pipe enthusiast, became world champion. Does she have any records too?
My personal best in the race is 1 hour and 17 minutes, nothing exceptional: in fact, I’m not a good competitor, but on the other hand, I appreciate everything related to the management and organization of events, races, meetings…
Madam President, we wish you perseverance in your difficult work, the overcoming of every obstacle, and that we will always have reason—as no one doubts—to be proud of the fact that Genny Magrin is our CIPC president.
